Wii Fit Routine

Project Samples

The Challenge
To create an online community dedicated to creating a motivated but fun environment for everyone who loves their Wii Fit. The site contained a social network for users to interact and motivate each other to get in shape using the Wii Fit.

My Role
WiiFitRoutine.com was a joint effort between myself and partner Keith Lindsay, long time friend and developer. I focused on the layout, design, and UX of the site, while Keith focused on development and coding. We both used our marketing and business expertise to make the site immensely successful.

The Approach
The entire process from concept through deployment was done part time, and took several months. When the Nintendo Wii Fit was launched in late 2008, we felt the fitness community would benifit from a place where individuals could motivate each other to stay in shape. Our idea was to provide a social community, along with a database of fitness information and routines using the Wii Fit. We also wrote and sold a fitness guide that generated revenue for the site. Keith and I spent the majority of the site’s development doing research on using the Wii Fit, along with recording fitness routine data. With this data, Keith developed a customized Wii Fit Routine Generator where users can specify their goals and experience with the Wii Fit, and the system will generate a specific fitness routine.

The design of the site had gone through 2 phases. The original design was more focused on colors and contrast, however I felt this design became very tired over time. So I set out to do somthing very unique, giving the site a “fitness center” feel using Wii Fit design cues. I found the design and UI very welcoming, and have received many compliments on it.

Wii Fit Routine had been featured on many sites, including national news publications and well known video game websites.

Unfortunately due to full time jobs and family reponsibilities, we could not keep up with site demand and ever changing web standards. As the game itself modernized and released new versions, the site became dated and stagnent. After generating a great deal of revenue over 5 years, I decided to take the site down in fall of 2013 due to malicious hacking attempts.
